I made my way to the Mix FM studio in Midrand, with Nelia and Annelien, for the interview with Manie Grove on his weekly photography show. We arrived just before a mighty storm broke loose!
Nelia to do the behind-the-scenes photos and Annelien, my operations person.
Johnathan Andrews preparing to go on air – Mix FM 93.8
I went on air with Manie at about 20:20.
He introduced me, and the beginning after the intro was rather sudden with a: “Tell us about your photography business…” (or something to that effect). It was great because this offered the opportunity to provide the anchor for the discussion to follow – the important aspect to me what that the listeners would be aware of the photography training that we offer at the Johnathan Andrews Academy.
We spoke about some fundamentals surrounding the approach to photography applicable when using the Manual Exposure Mode (setting shutter speed, aperture and ISO).

The conversation then lead to a discussion about composing a photograph using the “Rule of Thirds”, which turned out to be particularly interesting (based on feedback I received after the show).
During the show Manie also suggested that giving a photography training course to someone as a Christmas gift would be a great idea. I of course agreed and added a short account of the experience I had teaching photography to deaf kids at the St Vincent School for the Deaf. Many of these kids are born deaf and have no language reference, which must be tremendous life challenge. “To be able to learn and master the language of photography, which allows for virtual unlimited visual expression, is a gift of immeasurable value…”, in a nut shell, is what I tried to explain.
Almost 35 minutes on air simply flew by and Manie concluded our discussion by giving me the opportunity to provide the Academy website address, email and contact number. Thanks for this Manie!
