Professional Principles of Digital Photography

This short course is aimed at all people passionate about photography and suitable for beginner and amateur photographers. Whether you need a strong principle understanding of digital photography, responsible for social media content for your business, doing photography as a hobby, or simply want to take better photos to use online, this course will take your photography to the next level.

You can join the course with any brand of digital camera (bridge camera or ideally an SLR) and enjoy the benefits of walking away with a certificate and powerful tools in your photographic arsenal. The course is concluded with a photographic exhibition during which students can showcase one or more of their best photographs. Students also have the option of taking an examination.

The course is presented at the Italian Club Bedfordview - 7 Marais Road, Bedfordview.

Course Contents

DIGITAL PRINCIPLES

  • The DSLR camera kit, lenses
  • Basic terms and principles
  • Camera RAW files
  • Manual mode, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority
  • Shutter speed, Aperture/f-stop, ISO
  • Metering Modes, Auto Focus Areas, Auto Focus Modes
  • White Balance
  • Bracketing, Exposure Compensation
  • Composition

PRACTICAL TRAINING & ASSIGNMENTS

  • As much as possible practical exercises are dune during the sessions and students receive assignments to complete in their own time in preparation for the following session.

TEST & FINAL ASSIGNMENT

  • Students have the option to take an examination (a multiple choice test and submit a final assignment which will both used for grading purposes.)
    • The examination fee is R550 per person and this is payable in addition to the course fee of R1950.
    • An overall mark of 55% is required to pass.
    • The following certificates are awarded:
      • 55% to 69% - Proficiency Certificate in Digital Photography Principles
      • 70% to 89% - Distinction Certificate in Digital Photography Principles
      • 90% and higher - Certificate of Merit Certificate in Digital Photography Principles
  • Students who choose not to take examination, or who do not achieve the minimum pass park for the examination, will receive a Certificate of Attendance.
Course & Class Duration
  • Session 1 to 3 ... Theoretical and practical classroom training of +- 2 hours per session.
  • Session 4 (optional extra) ... Examination.
  • Session 5 ... Photographic Exhibition.

Requirements

PHOTOGRAPHY EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

  • No photography experience is required. This is a beginners course.
  • The course is presented in English.

EQUIPMENT

  • Bring your own camera to use during the sessions.
Course Fee
  • The course fee is R1950 per person.
  • To book your place, a deposit of R750 is required and the balance of the course fee is payable 2 days prior to course commencement.
  • The course fee excludes:
    • the optional examination fee of R550.
    • any photography exhibition prints/canvases.
    • tickets for guests to attend the photography exhibition.
Photography Exhibition

The course is concluded with a photography exhibition when each student has the opportunity to exhibit one or more of their best photographs.

Invite as many people as you like to attend! Guests buy an entrance ticket of R75 each, which includes light snacks.

A full cash bar is available during the exhibition.

Please note that the course fee does not include printing and mounting of any photographs. Students who choose to take part in the photographic exhibition are required to supply their own exhibition pieces - ideally A2 size stretched canvases. Students will be supplied with easels to display their photographs.
